    Item description as {host:key.func(param)}

    Our organisation has around 300 Cisco routers and switches to monitor with SNMP. Each router has at least 3 IPSec tunnels to monitor, the "hub" sites have up to 100 tunnels.

    Each tunnel is identified by three distinct names:-

    Cisco interface name e.g. "Tunnel1024"
    Cisco interface description e.g. "Tunnel to Timbuktu"
    SNMP if index e.g. "76"

    The interface descriptions change as sites and partners are added and removed while the SNMP index remains the same.

    When an interface goes down, we see a trigger and generate an alert.

    The trigger will show:
    "ifOperStatus76 on hub-rtr03 is down"

    "ifOperStatus76" has no meaning to our helpdesk staff.

    I would like to have the item description for ifOperStatus76 dynamically read value of item ifDescription76 and display that value.

    Despite finding several questions and requests related to this functionality in the forums and experimenting with a number of uses for User Macros and Regular Expressions, I do not have a working solution.

    Is this possible in 1.8.4 or should I enter a "feature request"?

    regards,
