    Monitor over internet

I must be missing something. I have the Zabbix book, and just cannot figure this out. The workstation just doesn't want to connect. Machines inside the local network where the zabbix server is work fine.

Somebody please give me some help here.

    Details:
    ------
The workstation to monitor is at a client site with standard dynamic IP. Let's assume we cannot make any changes to the client router. XP Pro. Zabbix_agentd.conf has:

Server=<public ip of my zabbix server>
    Hostname=Workstation1

I can telnet to port 10051 fine.

At the server have added the Host as follows...
    Name: Workstation1
    Groups: Windows Servers
    Linked template:template_windows
    DNS name: Workstation1
    IP address: 0.0.0.0
    Connect to: DNS Name
    Zabbix agent port 10051
    Monitored by: no proxy
    Status: monitored

Thanks. any help is appreciated. It is probably something small that I am missing.

If you can't forward a port to the worstation (probably not useful if it's using DHCP anyway) then you might want to take a look at using Active Agent. That's how I do it.

      Thank you wizard!

      That got it working.

Why can't this be more obvious in the documentation? (rhetorical question). Also would have been easier if one of the standard included templates was "active"; instead you have to modify an existing template.

I have to say I don't find the documentation very clear in a lot of areas, but the basics are all there you just have to be prepared to experiment and research.

Given the size of the project and the time it must take to develop I think expecting better documentation is a big ask, I for one would rather the time is spent adding and improving features and we'll figure out how best to implement them as we go. There's a lot of valuable information here on the forum and elsewhere on the internet.

Compared to the documentation for some commercial products (from Solarwinds for example) Zabbix's is brilliant.
