Proxy Missing Data

I have a setup where my zabbix server connects to a proxy via a VPN.
If the VPN goes down (but not the proxy) I lose data for that whole time period.

I was under the impression (perhaps incorrecty) that the proxy would sync the data to the master upon re-establishment of a connection?

Any thoughts / ideas appreciated.
