database connections after 2.0.6 upgrade

My server failed to start after upgrade with

[Z3001] connection to database 'zabbixnet' failed: [1040] Too many connections

The mysql db supports 800 connections, I reduced pollers and pingers from 200 to 100 just to get the server started. It now starts and has 588 DB connections in use. There are only about 255 zabbix_server processes on the server.

Did something change or was I just close to the edge before?

Check the current settings and if necessary, increase the number of connections in the /etc/my.cnf (http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/...nnections.html).
