    MariaDB Issue

    I am installing Zabbix for the first time so I can test it out. I have Ubuntu 12.04LTS and MariaDB 5.5. When I tried to install the deb package I get this error:
    Reading package lists... Done
    Building dependency tree
    Reading state information... Done
    Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
    requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
    distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
    or been moved out of Incoming.
    The following information may help to resolve the situation:

    The following packages have unmet dependencies:
    zabbix-server-mysql : Depends: libmysqlclient16 (>= 5.1.21-1) but it is not installable
    Recommends: mysql-server (>= 4.0.16-2)
    Recommends: snmpd but it is not going to be installed
    Recommends: snmptt but it is not going to be installed

    When I checked MariaDb installed libmysqlclient18. How do I work around this issue?

    Although MariaDB acts like a replacement for MySQL in most situation, if Zabbix developers came with different packages/sources specifically for MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, DB2 and Sqlite this signals me that MySQL is a software requirement and you should stick to it.

    Do you have any particular needs to use MariaDB ?

      reasons to use MariaDB

      I have used MySQL for many years, however I am concerned with Oracle's ownership. They are not open source friendly. With a new project I wanted to start with a new DB.

        More troubles

        So I could not get MariaDb to work. I tried MySQL. still won't work. Then I realized that I am using Ubuntu 12.04 and Zabbix needs 10.04. No way I am downgrading. So much for a trial. I will have to look elseware,

          When I want to install Zabbix on my Debian Wheezy server with MariaDB installed apt-get wants to uninstall MariaDB and install MySQL instead.
          How can I prevent that?
          Thanks in advance!

              Yeah, I know. But then I have to do it again for every update.
              Would be nice to have a solution with apt-get
