    How to use Vsphere Template?

    Hello Everybody,

    i have successfully upgraded to 2.2. following the manual

    I am now all exited about the new killer-feature Esx and Vcenter Monitoring.

    I have successfully imported the template. Now comes the point where i am uncertain. Giving Zabbix the login infos for the esx hosts and/or the vcenter. I have read somewhere (can not find the link anymore) that the credentials need need to be inserted under Makro in the template. Is that correct? I have done it and it does not seem to work.

    The problem i have now, is that zabbix does not do anything with the host. It does not give any errors and the logfiles stay empty about the vmware hosts. The server can ping and resolve them while pinging.

    Can someone help?
    Is there maybe a proper how to, somewhere?

    Thank you in advance.

      perfect. Thanks.

      I have done it the way your have shown it on the screenshot for the esx hosts and the vcenter server. But nothing is happening.

      Normaly after a short while in the Lates Data tab, you would see the new applications eg. Storage ect. which is defined in the template. But nothing is showing up.

      Any ideas? There is absolutely nothing showing in the syslog or zabbix-server.log regarding the vmware hosts.

        How did you set it up?
        Did you only attach the hypervisor template? Or did you want to discover the VM guests (and hypervisors) on that host?

        If you want to let Zabbix do the discovery, then the only template you assign to the ESX server is the Template Virt VMware. Zabbix will then do discovery and it will automatically create groups (Such as "Hypervisors" and "VM's") and it will automatically assign the correct templates to them.

        Since this is a Discovery rule though, it can take upwards of an hour to do the discovery process.

        BTW, I didn't do the credential macros at the template level since I was only working with one test ESX box. I did it at the host level.

          I only attached the "template Virt VMware" to the hosts and the vcenter.

          I set the username,pass and url to each host and the vcenter.

            I saw the same behavior, but after stopping/starting the zabbix_server process all data started to come in.

            Also make sure you updated the zabbix_server config file (vmware parameters)

              oh. I think that is what is missing. Could you point me to the settings that need to be made in the zabbix_server.conf please?

              Thank you.

                These are the vmware zabbix server config items that need to be there:

                ### Option: StartVMwareCollectors
                # Number of pre-forked vmware collector instances.
                #
                # Mandatory: no
                # Range: 0-250
                # Default:
                StartVMwareCollectors=5

                ### Option: VMwareFrequency
                # How often Zabbix will connect to VMware service to obtain a new data.
                #
                # Mandatory: no
                # Range: 10-86400
                # Default:
                VMwareFrequency=60

                ### Option: VMwareCacheSize
                # Size of VMware cache, in bytes.
                # Shared memory size for storing VMware data.
                # Only used if VMware collectors are started.
                #
                # Mandatory: no
                # Range: 256K-2G
                # Default:
                VMwareCacheSize=8M

                    alright. Zabbix now discovered quite a few things on my hosts.

                    Strangely i do have lots of "simple check unsupported" errors. I have added a screenshot of one of my hosts.

                    Any ideas how come? There a lots of infos which i would love to have.

                    The log file only tells me

                    item [hypervisor:vmware.hv.memory.size.ballooned[{$URL},{HOST.HOST}]] became not supported: Simple check is not supported

                    thank you.

                      What version of vCenter/vSphere are you monitoring?
                      I get Not Supported for the DataStore items on vCenter 4.1, but it works fine on 5.1

                      Devs are checking into that issue.

                      Not sure why you have so many Unsupported items.

                        Additonally, it might help a bit if you can post what you have on zabbix_server.conf.
