Host disappears on reboot - how do i make them persistent

Hi All, i have been working on my first build of Zabbix, installed the appliance added my first device but the VM freezes and when i reboot the host has gone.

I am relatively new to Zabbix and Linix, how do i find out whats going on with my host.

    Is this a DB issue?

    Where do i start :-(

    Hello and welcome!

If you are running a VM it is possible that it freezes due to lack of system resources. Check the RAM and CPU you have assigned to your VM.

If you really want to get to know Zabbix and Linux more, I would suggest you to try and install it the appropriate way on a VM with supported Linux distro of your choice. Probably one of the easiest options for you would be Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS with no graphical interface.

With Ubuntu installed on a VM, try to follow all the steps from Zabbix documentation and install Zabbix from packages.

Many resources are quickly available on all topics required to accomplish this, so go on and don't hesitate to ask.

    Best Regards,
    Ingus

One more way to get acquainted with zabbix is installing Virtual Appliance.
It is fully configured VM image which contain correctly working Zabbix Server, with Database and frontend.

All what you need - just import VM and play with it.

It is available in the following formats:
      • vmdk (VMWare/Virtualbox)
      • OVF (Open Virtualisation Format)
      • KVM
      • CD ISO
      • HDD/flash image
      • Preload ISO
      • Xen guest
      • Microsoft VHD
      • Preload USB
      Sincerely yours,
      Aleksey

        Thanks for the reply,

So I am currently running on the virtual appliance, as this was the quickest way to get up and running and learn. At the moment I have this on an EXSI server with 1.5GB of RAM. When i check the resources on the server, the Zabbix server is not maxed out.

I tried build on from scratch but came up against so many problems (5 hours trying yesterday before i gave up) I will give it another try today and follow it to the letter and see how it goes.

I was confused as to why a crashing server would delete the host, implies the DB is not saving or something. I will try a rebuild and see what the results are.

        Report back soon

If you plan to use Zabbix in long term and really want to get to know it, than you should better start it all from scratch.

I really cannot comment on your VM crashes. It looks like the VM is not saving data to DB due to that but I have no clue why.

You said that you have been trying for hours encountering many problems. What issues did you encounter in that process? What manual did you follow?

            Hi, apzero!

            I went through the same-path.
First, I installed VM appliance and play around for couple of months.
Then, I installed CentOS VM and Zabbix Server and MySQL - all from scratch, using Zabbix documentation - Installation from packages.
So far I have never regretted about my first experience with VM appliance.
            Sincerely yours,
            Aleksey
