Do the Zabbix Server and Zabbix Agent have to be running on the same machine?

it is not a MUST be, but you can do that, and the most users do that, becaue they want to monitor the zabbix-server too

Zabbix server - collector of Data and (possible) frontend
Zabbix agent - source of data

You can install Zabbix Agent on any device which data you would like to collect. Include Zabbix Server as a "device"
