    New to Zabbix

I have just installed my 1st Zabbix server and have spent the day trying to get 1 Windows 2012 server working. Am I wrong in thinking the Agent is the better option for server OS's? SNMP didn't seem to get much data.

If you can install the agent and let it function, you can get detailed OS information. Also, you can monitor not only the standard functions, but also scripts and commands via the agent and monitor the results. It is also beneficial to be able to monitor the log by installing the agent.

The standard Windows SNMP agent will not be useful because there are few information that can be obtained.

SNMP monitoring of hosts was attempted in the 90's and failed.

You are not wrong at all.
Sometimes, installing 3rd party software ( agent in this case ) is not an option because of security policy or any other reasons, but normally, usage of agent will make your life a lot easier and it will allow you to monitor hundreds of metrics from OS
