How to report unsupported item for servers in active/passive configuration?

I seems cannot find a good solution on how to monitor for unsupported items for system with active/passive processes. For example two servers with MySQL, only one server has MySQL running at a time.
Unsupported item action always reports the items on the passive server are in unsupported state.
What could be the strategy to only get unsupported item notification if both servers have the same problem?
