vPoller vSphere Import & Zabbix Characters Set

I am investigating Zabbix-VMware integration for my organization. I have already taken a look at the native VMware monitoring in Zabbix 2.4.x and moved on to look at vPoller integration. I ran into the problem of Zabbix character support when trying to run the vSphere Import Tool.
We use the ":" and the "_" in our datastore names and this causes the Zabbix host/datastore creation process to fail. Our environment is fairly large so renaming the hosts/datastores with supported Zabbix characters is not really an option.
How can we perform realtime replacement of unsupported characters during vSphere object import so that Zabbix can happily create the objects sent to it by vSphere Import Tool?
I'm not a programmer but I would think some code could be added to the vSphere Import Tool to strip unsupported characters and replace them with legal characters. Is there a better solution ? Any guidance is much appreciated.
