Can no longer edit maps

All the maps work from Monitoring, and I can click the edit button on map configurations, but when I click any map to actually edit the elements I just get an error "Map Image update failed".

Any idea what broke and how to fix it?

Turns out this was due to a cascade of deficiencies that resulted in a full hard drive.
