    Unable to configure Zabbix MySQL database in Ubuntu 22.04

    Hi Friends,
    I have been trying to install Zabbix server (full installation) on Ubuntu 22.04 desktop edition. The Ubuntu has been fully updated and i have been following the procedure provided at the official download page of Zabbix. When I install the zabbix with all components using MySQL database server and Apache web server, the system completes the installation without any error. Installation log is shown below;

    When I issue the command to start mysql using command given in the procedure at the official download page, following error occurs.

    ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2)

    I have tried to reinstall all packages and zabbix-mysql-server separately as well, but same error occurs every time. I have searched the socket file mentioned at given path, but could not be found. I have tried to search the my.cnf file that may contain the socket file path, the default conf file doesn't contain the path information for said socket file. And I can't any other my.cnf file where MySQL server config may have been saved for Zabbix MySQL Server. Can't proceed to next step until this process is successfully completed. Please help me to troubleshoot this problem.

      Ah is see, following you Installation Log there was or is no mysql-server installed.
      You can choose between mysql-server and mariadb-server.

      Id suggest you install mariadb-server
      Code:
      apt install mariadb-server mariadb-client
      maybe you have to remove mysql client first

      apt remove mysql-client

      Once setup you should be able to continue in the zabbix tutorial at "create initial database".

          Sorry, my fault. I didn't pay attention to the packages being installed. I assumed the setup will install the required components by itself.

          Hi,

          Error usually means that the socket file does not exist (mysql server not running or not configured properly)
          from my own experience - MySQL / MariaDB Configuration Files under Ubuntu 22 are a bit of a mess.

          First off, check you MySQL Configuration:
          Code:
          grep -rnHi socket /etc/mysql/
          This should give you an idea where the socket is defined, make sure to follow the includes.
          socket variable maybe present several times, last definition counts.

          You may find that there is also a (MySQL) Client configuration - that one tells the client where to search for the socket.

          On Ubuntu 22 /var/run is a symlink to /run.
          FHS 3.0 defines /run as Standard (following the specification from 2015) - therefor on Ubuntu 22 you should make sure /run/mysqld/mysqld.sock is configured.

          Check if the mysql service is running
          Code:
          systemctl status mysqld.service
          Check mysql logs for errors
          Code:
          journalctl -u mysqld.service
          Depending on your mysql configuration there might also be a log in /var/log/mysql.

          tl;dr you need to figure our why you cant access the database or why mysql is not running.

                I have tried everything you suggested, and from the result, I assume that MySQL is not configured to run as service. There is not config for socket either. And no MySQL related logs are there too. Output of your suggested commands is listed below;

                Can you please guide if I can configure the MySQL server to run as service, or I should try to install using some alternate method.

                Id suggest you install mariadb-server

                apt install mariadb-server mariadb-client
                maybe you have to remove mysql client first

                apt remove mysql-client

                Once setup you should be able to continue in the zabbix tutorial at "create initial database".

                    Sorry, my fault. I didn't pay attention to the packages being installed. I assumed the setup will install the required components by itself.
