Agent install - pls help. No pre-compiled agents available

On zabbix homepage there is no pre compiled agent 3.0 for ubuntu 12.04.

I complied on one server and I tried to replace the binaries on other servers. But zabbix won't start if replaced. Old agent 1.8 version, new agent 3.0.

Error: could not access PID file for zabbix_agentd.

If I replace it back to 1.8 binary, it'll start the agent. The file permission is all root. Any idea what to look at? Logs won't get updated. I've tried changing the pid path too.

Still no luck. zabbix can't start by init.t scripts or service start if binary is changed from 1.8 to 3.0. I downloaded a ppa build to try it out.

I have one server where i compiled zabbix-agent on 16.04 and comparing init script to the old 1.8 version is same.

This does not look like permission issue. But not sure why it can't read pid.

/etc/init.d/zabbix_agent status
Error: could not access PID file for zabbix_agentd
/etc/init.d/zabbix_agent stop
No /usr/sbin/zabbix_agentd found running; none killed

binary can be started fine..
zabbix_agentd -c /etc/zabbix/zabbix_agentd.conf

bump.. Still waiting for reply. Has anyone installed 3.0 agent on 12.04 ubuntu?
