items/checks not working on ZABBIX 1.1alpha6

With the exception of ping checks none of my other items/checks work after upgrading to alpha6 from alpha5. Tcpdump does not show zabbix doing anything besides the ping checks (no snmp, http, pop3, smtp). The log does not reveal much.

Both 1.1 Alpha4 & Alpha5 work on this machine.
