Help with Hyper-V appliance setup?

Hi all,

I'm looking to test out Zabbix, and have a Hyper-V host (Server 2012 R2) ready to go. I downloaded the 3.04 appliance file for hyper-v 2012, extracted the .vhdx file, and created a new VM (gen2) using that .vhdx file as the hard drive. Unfortunately, it won't boot - gives a BIOS level error about no bootable media found. I tried turning on and off the 'secure boot' option, but still no love. Anyone done this successfully that could share some tips?

Got it working

For what it's worth, I gave up on the 2012 version (which was a .vhdx file). I instead downloaded the version for hyper-v 2008 (which has the .vhd file in it), and set up a Gen1 virtual machine, and it worked fine. Not sure if my understanding of Hyper-V is broken or if the 2012 .vhdx file is broken, but I don't need the features in the 2012 version for this test, so I'm not too worried.

I tried using the appliance version when I wanted to see the differences between 2.4 and 3.0, and the only way I could get it to boot was to build the VM as a generation 1 VM, even on Server 2012 R2. My guess is that the appliance was compiled with BIOS instead of UEFI so a Gen 1 virtual machine is the only real choice.

If you're using Hyper-V, be sure to also look at Microsoft's recommendations for running Linux guests. There are is an additional kernel with Hyper-V support that can improve the performance tremendously, and also give you features such as dynamic memory.
