Zabbix Server Continuously Sending Configuration Data to All Proxies

    Hi,

After upgrading our Zabbix database to use primary keys and subsequently upgrading from Zabbix version 6.4 to 7.0, we have encountered an issue where the Zabbix server continuously sends configuration data to all proxies in an endless loop. Now server is sending configuration data to all proxies approximately once every 5 seconds, configuration revision numbers incrementing constantly and proxies frequently requesting configuration updates. We did not no significant configuration changes that would typically trigger such frequent updates.

    Log looks like this:
20240610:170623.946 sending configuration data to proxy "Proxy1" at "X.X.X.X", datalen 434, bytes 207 with compression ratio 2.1
20240610:170624.035 sending configuration data to proxy "Proxy2" at "X.X.X.X", datalen 434, bytes 207 with compression ratio 2.1
    Steps Taken:

    Checked Proxy and Server Configuration:
Verified that ProxyConfigFrequency is set to a reasonable value (currently 3600 seconds). It wasn't set before upgrade at all.
Ensured proxies are correctly configured and associated with the Zabbix server.
    Reviewed Recent Changes:
Examined the auditlog table in the Zabbix database for any recent changes that might trigger frequent updates, but I am not expert in reading this.

    Any advice is very welcome.

I take it that you have active proxies because you are talking about the proxies requesting configuration updates.

When capturing the 7.0 server-proxy traffic and looking at it using a recent Wireshark 4.3.0rc0 version, I see the normal 10-second interval (ProxyConfigFrequency is at default):

Name:	image.png
Views:	481
Size:	45.3 KB
ID:	485337

Also note the first packet (the capture was started before starting proxy) is larger than the subsequent ones as it really is the full sync, others are just the mandatory fields. The config_revision field is increasing though.

But, are you saying that you have successfully applied the ProxyConfigFrequency=3600 directive in the proxy configuration (when using active proxy) but you are still seeing proxy configuration updates happening more frequently?

Also the Zabbix server logs for the first three requests:

33685:20240610:193907.062 sending configuration data to proxy "Proxy1" at "192.168.7.81", datalen 6892, bytes 2298 with compression ratio 3.0
33688:20240610:193917.090 sending configuration data to proxy "Proxy1" at "192.168.7.81", datalen 489, bytes 244 with compression ratio 2.0
33687:20240610:193927.104 sending configuration data to proxy "Proxy1" at "192.168.7.81", datalen 489, bytes 245 with compression ratio 2.0

So these log entries are actually normal. I don't think I saw anything like this in the logs before the upgrade, which is why I automatically assumed something was misconfigured, and there's nothing about it in the documentation. I must admit I was wrong and originally left ProxyConfigFrequency set to 10... Anyway, the problem is resolved, even though there wasn't really one.

        Thanks for your time.

I experience the same "issue". Before upgrading to 7.0 from 6.4.x there was no spamming of these messages. Now I see them every 10sec, so the complete log is a mess...
Are you really sure that this is intended?

There is now a feature request to change the logging:

Please go and vote for it if that sounds useful to you.

A small follow-up for this: Zabbix 7.0.5 has included the change proposed in the feature request above, and the servers and proxies don't log the continuous messages about sending/receiving the configuration any more.
