Zabbix history syncer processes more than 75% busy (v5.2.7)

We have a VM running a Zabbix 5.2.7 (revision 91e8333180) server, and a MySQL 5.7.44 server. (It is in the pipeline to upgrade to 6.0)
The database is This setup has been working fine for years.
This morning, we had to do an upgrade on the VMWare ESXi host that the VM is hosted on, thus had to do a shutdown.
After the upgrades, we started the VM, and after two hours, Zabbix started reporting "Zabbix history syncer processes more than 75% busy".
After a while, all graphing stops.
I did a restart of the Zabbix Server service, which took a while to first stop.
In the logs, "syncing history data" with a percentage appreared.
This took around 10 minutes to get to 100%, and the service completed a restart.
All will then be fine, but after about 30 minutes, the issue will repeat itself.
I don't understand how this has been working for literal years, and after a shutdown / startup, the service starts failing.
Any assistance will be appreciated.
