Office365 e-mail configuration not working though others have?

    Hi,

I've been digging into the Office365 alert email thing that many others have noted. I ultimately found https://www.zabbix.com/forum/showthread.php?t=56573 which gave me some hope, but when I configure it similarly I get the error "Login denied: i/▒▒▒" in the server log. I also came across https://support.zabbix.com/browse/ZBXNEXT-3367 which, again, gave me some hope but (a) it's for an older version than I'm using so risky but even so (b) it would take a rebuild which we're not set up for. At this point I'm thinking I'll just go with GMail or some other e-mail service but I'm confused as to why it seems some folks get the Office365 e-mail capability to work while nothing seems to work for me (and I've tried every recommendation and permutation of ports, protocols, etc.) Does it depend on how your Office365 e-mail is set up?

    Regards,
    Ed

      Yes.

what did you set at media type ?

I configured the media tpe to point to my e-mail server in Azure with the appropriate logins. I ran through various configurations with the ports (25, 465, 587, 995) and connection security (NONE, STARTTLS, SSL/TLS) but nothing seemed to work. I'm able to set up pointing to Gmail with no issues and e-mails are sent fine.

and did you made a test throw zabbix? like telnet mailserver 25 ?

      Yes (succeeded.)

Based on others who've posted similar issues with Azure e-mail connectivity, some who've gotten it to work and others who have not, I seem to be overlooking something but cannot quite put my finger on it. I don't get any obvious error message other than the "Login" message previously stated (which makes debugging this a bit annoying) but that's what I'm basing my theory that this has to do with the AUTH mismatch since Zabbix doesn't support AUTH login.

when you connected via telnet did you try to send email throw there or only cheked connectivity ?
if you havent try to send please try like this :

        ehlo
        MAIL FROM: YOUREMAIL@MAILSERVER
        RCPT TO: SOMEMAIL@MAILSERVER
        DATA
        Subject:test
        This is a test message
        .
        quit

if theres any error paste it here. did you get this email test ?

and when there is a trigger and it tries to send email, you should see the specific error at Reports-> Action log
        also past it here.

        thanks

I should have been more accurate in my previous message. Yes, I did actually try to transmit a message with the telnet session and yes the message did get transmitted. (It landed in my spam folder but that's another issue that's probably not relevant.)

From the action log, the error I get is the same one I noted in my original post. "Login denied" (which I got from tailing the Zabbix server log. I assume it's the same source.) I actually have two triggers set up. One going to Gmail and one going to our Office365 email server. The Gmail one works perfectly.

I'd done that in the past as well but did it again for good measure to make sure I didn't miss something. It dumps out a little more information, but nothing much more. It shows ports, security, and auth settings in the log (which are already known from the settings.) Then it just says

              Login denied: iࠬڿ
              End of send_email():FAIL
              End of execute_action():FAIL

                  3.2

As mentioned earlier in the thread, my guess is that this has to do with the AUTH PLAIN vs. AUTH LOGIN issue but since I'm not wise in inner workings of SMTP I haven't been able to ferret out the cause/solution.

I think this is just a bug that will hopefully be fixed or at least be mitigated by a later version. My alternative is to use GMail for the time being.

                  Thanks for your suggestions.

                    Zabbix 3.2
                    Office 365

These settings are working for me:
                    Type: Email
                    SMTP: smtp.office365.com
                    Port: 587
                    SMTP helo: my domain
SMTP email: my mailbox from which i send
                    Connection security: STARTTLS
                    SSL verify peer: not checked
                    SSL verify host: not checked
                    Authentication: Normal password
                    Username: mailbox as per above
                    Password: password for above mailbox
                    Enabled: checked

Keep in mind that this method doesn't support HTML or i wasn't able to make it working.
