Item Unknown

Not sure if this is the place for this. If not then accept my apologies.

My question is related to an item inside a host becoming unknown after a timeout. What is this time out and can it be turned off so that items are always active?

So does no response mean the answer is that no one knows? It would really be useful for my application to be able to leave some items per host "Available" and monitored regardless of the actual state of that checked item.
