I installed Zabbix but UI says server is not running

I installed Zabbix following this Howto

However when I go to ->Reports->Status of Zabbix
the line ZABBIX server is running says Value=No

I tried to do telnet to port of the machine
that is supposed to have the agent running, and it seems
to be something running there, so I suppose something
of Zabbix is running there correctly.

I had that too.

I just did it all over again on a new install and it worked.

Is you MySQL connection OK ?

I was some time off from zabbix, but back again I need to get familair again

did you start the "zabbix_server" under non-root rights?
that's a MUST BE, also you need to have /etc/zabbix/ directory containing zabbix_server.confg and zabbix_agentd.conf

Yes, but soemthing went wrong here, still when doing that... I started from scratch to be sure.

in how far do you mean "something went wrong here? did you "make" it under your account you start the server with?

This is a known issue. I posted a patch for this a long time ago, but it was never applied. You can find the patch and instructions at PATCH: Improve Server Status In Reports
