No Images or Graphs 1.1.7 -> 1.4 CentOS 5

First off I have researched all the threads on this problem. (i.e. php-gd, php.ini gd is enabled and referenced in the php.d and verified with phpinfo.)

Sceniaro:
CentOS5, PHP 5.1.6-12.el5

dumped the 1.1.7 DB and setup a new dedicated server.
imported the DB into mysql
ran the patch.sql to update the DB
Compiled and installed zabbix 1.4
Started zabbix.
Everything is great except the embeded images and graphs.

I get "The image cannot be displayed, because it contains errors."

No errors in Apache error_log

Any help would be great...

You may try to save the broken image and see if it contains any plain text english warning or error messages.

From FireFox: The image “http://10.1.20.55/image.php?height=24&imageid=8” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

These are the default embeded images.
