Enable / Disable item in a Template applies to all linked hosts?

It seems to me, if you want to enable or disable an item in a template, it shouldn't apply to all linked hosts, no?

Its really annoying when I have all the hosts setup the way I want and I decide I want to change the default of enable/disable and it changes it on all hosts.

Am I off base or is there a better way to go about this?
