Ping via agent? Or simple check?

    Hi there,

I have another question about Zabbix:

We are currently checking Zabbix to migrate from Nagios to Zabbix.
We have several hundered of boxes, which are checked on several things:

    - Is it pingable?
    - Is HTTP available?
    - Is POP3 available?
    - Is SMTP available?

The latter 3 are done with HTTP_PERF and ceterea, but I want to check from 1 machine to the other if it is pingable.

Which configuration should I use? I have 1 host to ping from (lightning.diedx.nl), and I've checked with simple check ping[hostname.nl], but it returns unsupported feature? The ping feature should work, but only if the host that must be monitored has a zabbix agent installed. This will not be done

    Anyone?

I believe you need to use the simple check parameter key called "icmpping", you can also use "http", "pop" and "smtp" to check if the respective servers are up and running.

If you just use "ping" then I believe you will need to have the zabbix agent installed onto the corresponding host which is being monitored.

I've also checked icmpping. Will check again to be sure

      Done. Gives a non-supported

Hmmmmm ive just tried a simple check aswell:

        Type: Simple Check
        key: icmpping
        Update interval: 3600
        Keep in history: 1
        Type of info: Numeric
        Store Value: As it is

And that doesn't seem to be returning any results either...i jus get a "dash" i.e "-", when i check the latest value for the monitored host.

        Am i doing something wrong???

ICMPPING is only available with zabbix-agent.

I'm currently checking with another host. e.g.: adding host, adding item to the host, called ping, etc.

But then: I must add 100> hosts. Not an option. Maybe I just might drop ping

But in the Zabbix manual, icmpping is listed under "Simple Checks" - which should mean that you don't need to install the zabbix agent on the monitored host, for which you are running an icmpping against.

Incidently the host that i am running this icmpping on, has got a zabbix agent installed on it....all the other parameters are being returned just fine.

              Ok, that was the problem.

              Solution:

For every host you want to ping, you must add a host. When creating the host , DISABLE the monitoring.

Add a item on the host, called icmpping.

              Enable monitoring on the host.

                Strange!

                I followed that process through:-

Host was added before, and parameters were being monitored.
Disbabled the host - set it to "not monitored"
Added a new, additional item to be monitored - icmpping
Enable the host - set it to "monitored"

But im still not getting any values back....

I dont understand how this is being displayed.

Ive setup a "simple check" - icmpping on one of my hosts. If I look in the "queue", then the "next time to check value is shown as" 01.01.1970 01:00:00, and also in the "latest value" i recieve a "dash i.e - " instead of a number.

Can any body offer some advice?
