icmpping is not returning values for some hosts

Searched the forum for similar problem, but all I could find was posts about icmpping not working at all which is because of missing or privilege-less fping binary. In this case fping is installed and set up and for most of the hosts it is returning values.

    Configuration
    • Zabbix v1.4.4 on Linux
    • Almost 780 hosts associated with one template
    • All hosts are set to use IP rather than DNS names
    • Template has 3 snmp v2 items
    • Template has 1 icmpping (simple check) item
    • Template has one trigger associated with "icmpping" item
    • Template has one graph defined

Everything is almost OK except for one thing - for some hosts icmpping doesn't collect any data while snmp is. Host shows as "monitored" and "available", but trigger associated with this icmpping remains ins state "unknown". tcpdump shows no icmp traffic going to these hosts. Tried to remove association with template with "unlink&clear" - no results. Deleted host and created from zero - no results. Tried to play with "StartPingers" and "PingerFrequency" in zabbix.conf, but no luck.

Is there anything else I should check

I have an identical configuration, running RedHat EL 5.2.
I am experiencing the exact same problem.
544 hosts of 967 appear "pingable", though many more have no issue with SNMP items. I noticed you have received no reply here, did you ever figure this out?

Sadly I haven't had time to sort this one out. And during this time 1.4.4 zabbix version is little bit out of date. When I'll have some news on this, I will definitely post them here.

Found a work-around. Add a single SNMP item to your template, and save your template. Pick something common and light, such as Ethernet Interface InOctets. The "unknown" hosts will get picked up.

So you had hosts with only icmpping checks and you added snmp check? In my case I have hosts with icmp and snmp.

Yes, my issue was that the "Availability" would not update for hosts with icmp items only. If you are having issues with certain hosts only, double-check your snmp version, community string, and TCP port 161 connectivity to these hosts with snmpwalk FROM the Zabbix server.

Example if your SNMP community string is "public" and your IP is 10.0.0.1

            snmpwalk -v2c -cpublic -m all 10.0.0.1

If this is successful, trying unlink, save, relink to template, save.

That's all I have without a little more detail.
