It's so hard: Does everyone go thru this

OK, I installed zabbix 2.4.1 and now I am having hell putting in devices. It seems the only way to do this is to build templates myself because there are not any. So many cisco devices and only 4 cisco templates on http://www.zabbix.org/wiki/Zabbix_Templates

I have wireless devices from Cisco, Engenius and Ubiquiti.
I have Dell and Cisco Switches. Cisco routers. Cisco ASA and Palo Alto firewalls. Avaya PBX... worse yet I scoured the internet for zabbix templates for more recent cisco - like the ASA CX and 2650x, 2900 and 3900 series routers.

Zabbix is hard to install, hard to use and even harder to set up what it is needed for - monitioring. I saw friend of mine using PRTG at his site and laughed him to scorn for using that crap - but guess what, the joke was on me, as it only needed 2 steps to monitor a device - right click and add a device, then put in the snmp community... THAT's IT, it brought up all the interfaces on the router and automatically graphed them... and did way more, but my purpose is not to promote it... Just 2 steps. Why can't zabbix be that simple.

there's a default template called "Template SNMP Interfaces" - that should automatically discover all interfaces on any snmp device (switch etc), monitor traffic and a few more things on each of them, and graph traffic each interface. is that what you were looking for ?

if you had an older installation, you could even import the latest version of that template from https://www.zabbix.org/wiki/Zabbix_T...cial_Templates .

also, 2.4.1 is a bit oldish, better go for 2.4.5

I tried that template and did not get anything; is there something additional I need to install? Like do I need to install snmp mibs for cisco? or if.speed or any of the zabbix scripts here https://github.com/jjmartres/Zabbix/...er/zbx-scripts.
Yes I would like to upgrade but I rather get this thing working first; it was painfully hard to install on debian so uninstalling it and installing newer version is not something I look forward to, plus how do I not lose config information?

        1. you should just assign that template to a host and specify snmp community, if not 'public', in a user macro/variable

        2. no extra mibs or scripts needed

        3. if installing on debian was painful, consider the virtual appliance

        4. configuration could be kept by keeping the existing database, upgrade will not remove any configuration

You right zabbix is sometimes not the easiest thing, but its opensource and you can Form it vor develop things for it, also PRTG is nice but expansive and has some eye-candy things. But this is only for manager and you boss. Zabbix is all you need, mostly

If you have problems we will help you.
