I think that most of the time, routers and switches are monitored via SNMP and SNMP traps.

You cannot install the zabbix agent on a switch or router. On a server or PC, yes.

On your Cisco device, enable snmp using the following:

snmp-server community public #[change 'public' if necessary]
      snmp-server host <IP_of_ZabbixServer> version 2c public udp-port 161

Other useful Cisco commands for snmp:

snmp-server enable traps #[if you want snmptraps]
snmp-server ifindex persist #[ensures interface numbers don't change after a reboot]

On your zabbix host, link to one of the Cisco templates. If there is no template for your device, then you can make one by copying some of the items from one of the templates to your new template. Test the items/OIDs by using snmpwalk on the command-line of your Zabbix server.

      Have fun!

          MrKen,
Your command helped me get a connection to some of my Cisco switches so thank you very much for that! May I be so bold as to ask for more information on the Cisco templates please? I am new and am having difficulties finding what I need and I have asked in the Zabbix help forum but although I have many views I have no replies.
I do not know what you mean by link to one of the Cisco templates. I do not see a Cisco template but perhaps I don't have them loaded, turned on, or maybe just don't know where to look.
Is there more information about this somewhere? A link to a document that is specific to monitoring Cisco would be awesome.
I apologize for hijacking this thread but it is still Cisco related.
          Thanks in advance!

            Wrong
You can install zabbix agent on Cisco/CP/etc..., but it depends. You have to have precompiled version on agent with cisco/CP architecture, and then add it to "autostart" in expert mode.
I did it on some platforms

Get the agents and try to run on cisco. If you can run, you can "install" it.

            Bests,
            Grzegorz

You can find quite a few Cisco Templates here http://www.zabbix.com/wiki/templates/start
