1.6 settings exporting to 1.8

I am looking to replace my hardware that is running 1.6, can I import the settings from 1.6 into a 1.8 build?

You can also export your database, import it into your new 1.8 server and then run the database upgrade patch (see the manual) and then carry on on 1.8 exactly as you were on 1.6
