Move from Zabbix 1.4 to 1.8

What is the best method to move (upgrade) from Zabbix 1.4 to 1.8 ?
    1. Upgrade 1.4 to 1.6 and then to 1.8 ?
    2. export all hosts from 1.4 and import into 1.8

I tried the 2nd option and it sort of worked, the hosts all lost their Templates though which is no good. Also the web tests (web.test) produced XML errors when trying to import.

Also - are there any gotchas when upgrading - namely do certain item checks etc break ?

    1) Read the release notes
    2) Backup your database
    3) Backup your Zabbix software and settings.
    4) Perform the upgrade steps therein.
    5) Perform periodic updates when you reach major releases.

You can easily jump versions of the software using RPMs or other package managers, but you will need to follow the release notes for the schema upgrades.
