    how do the agents work

    Hi,

    I'm new to this so bare with me any help would be great.

    I've go into the web interface and added a host.

    I've downloaded the source 1.8 and done the following on the client.

    ./configure --enable-agent
    make install

    added the server into the zabbix_agentd.conf
    added the name as per what i made the host

    but i can't for the life of me get the zabbix agent to talk to the server.

    the /tmp/zabbix_agentd.log says its started OK but there is no IP address listed, googling showed others had IP's.

    what kind of troubleshooting is available?

    really struggling with this it seems simple but i can't seem to get it to work.

    thank you.

    Can you reach the zabbix client from the zabbix server by means of ping and/or telnet to TCP port 10050?
    Can you reach the zabbix server from the zabbix client by means of ping and/or telnet to TCP port 10051?
    can you post your zabbix_agentd.conf?

      Hey,

      Thanks for the info here are the results.

      1. Yes, telnet and ping worked OK.
      2. Telnet didn't work but ping yes.
      3. Below, i just grep'd out the lines starting win #

      Server=XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX (server IP address)
      Hostname=boxer

      boxer matches the name from the zabbix gui of the host i added.

      Thanks,
      Michael.

        And what exactly isn't working ?(apart from the part where you say you don't see an ipaddress in a logfile)
        did you set up something that needs the agent and doesnt work? Or is it just the assumption that since you don't see an ipaddress, it won't work?

          I just stopped the firewall.

          I can now telnet from the client to the server but this hasn't made any difference to zabbix.

            i guess i was under the assumption i could just install the agent point it at zabbix and zabbix would start monitoring it?

            Cheers.

                Hey,

                1. Yes, telnet and called ping proved helpful OK.
                2. Telnet didn't perform but called ping yes.
                3. Below, i just grep'd out the collections beginning win #

                Server=XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX (server IP address)
                Hostname=boxer
