Also it says zabbix server is not running on the gui zabbix dashboard. How do I make the service for zabbix start? I checked the etc folder and zabbix is in there. Then i looked in the init.d and zabbix is not in there.

I also tried service zabbix start and that didn't work.

      Thanks.

You are asking extremely basic questions that are in the documentation.
Please take time to read through it.

          Hello,
I did read through it and I tried zabbix_server start, and it is still saying that zabbix server is not running. I also have read through the documentation. I have been reading it for the past week. I appreciate your patience, this is my first time ever setting up anything like this. So all of this is new to me and it is a learning experience.

Update- I found in step 11 (Page 43 of the manual) to Run zabbix_server on server side.
          shell> cd bin
          shell> ./zabbix_server

However when I go to /bin I do not see zabbix_server. Am I looking in the wrong place? The manual does not specify otherwise. Thanks.

I am really confused now. I was in the gui for the zabbix dashboard and now it kicked me back to the install screen. I have all the correct config info. The only thing that changed was I installed the agent and ran a make install after configuring the agent. It keeps failing now, and I can't click "finish" it is greyed out.

            What do I do?

Several posts back, you said you ran the ./configure command, correct?
After that, didn't you also run "sudo make install" That is what creates the binaries and puts them in place. By default, the binaries should have gone to /usr/local/sbin and the zabbix_server.conf should go to /usr/local/etc

If they are not where you expect to find them... then search for them.
              sudo find / -name zabbix_server

And before you get things running, you will need to edit zabbix_server.conf and make any necessary changes. Be sure to specify where you want the zabbix_server.log to go. You'll be spending plenty of time looking at that.

Figured out my issue, now i am back into the dashboard again. Working on starting the server.

Update- I found the zabbix_server and zabbix_agent file in the /usr/local/sbin

                I did ./zabbix_server
                and ./zabbix_agent

Each time I enter this it brings me to the next line in the shell. Is this normal? Should there be a message telling me the server is running? Is there a command to see if the server is running?

Also is there a way to view log files on the dashboard and to search for specific key words? (I know you can do this in linux, but we are looking for a monitoring tool that allows you to look at log files in the gui interface as well)

Ok I think I started the ./zabbix_server and the .conf files are modified.

Should zabbix_server have been made in init.d when I ran make install? For some reason it is not there and is only under local/usr/sbin

And when I logged in and out of the zabbix dashboard it is still saying "NO" for the value of parameter "zabbix server is running". What am I doing wrong?
