    ICMP monitoring with map events

    Hello to all.

I just installed zabbix preload iso, and still not know all the features of zabbix. I'm trying to create a map of my network monitoring based solely on ICMP. I want that when a host is not responding to ping, it appears highlighted in the network map. Does anyone know any way to do this?

    Grateful.

Did you have a chance to read the documentation?
    Configuring a network map

It's pretty simple after you do some experiments.
Just don't forget to SAVE map before you close the browser's window.
    Sincerely yours,
    Aleksey

I already read the map manual. Let me explain exactly what is happening.
I have included a device with icmp monitoring. In the menu Configuration->Hosts, my device 192.168.168.X is down (no response for icmp requests). So, I added this device in the map, and the map show me that the device is ok. No matter what i do, the device is always ok on the map, everytime.
Can you have any idea what is happening?
Sorry for my poor english, I hope you understand what I intended to say.

      Grateful.

Just make sure the icon settings for your host are set correctly.

When you added device to map - did you change the Type from IMAGE to HOST? Did you fill the field HOST with correct name of device?

PS I did the same mistakes. I added some IMAGEs on map and long wondered why nothing happens with my devices on map? I predict that your next question will be about LINKS between devices and Labels for Links.

PPS sorry for my English, I hope I explained what I meant.
          Sincerely yours,
          Aleksey

Thanks for the replies, even I could not solve my problem. I'll show some pictures, maybe this will help solve my problem.

I added my device with ICMP monitoring. Note that my device is down (note the red Z in the "Monitoring" column) (picture 1).

Added this host on my map. In case of problem, the icon changes to the cloud. (shown in picture 2)

However, the Monitoring menu-> Maps-> Map My device is still ok. (picture 3)

Anyone have any idea what might be happening?

            Grateful.

The red Z means only that the zabbix agent can not be reached.
If you define just an icmpping item: that works without an active or running zabbix agent. So if this is your only item, the host is up and OK.

              Nothing wrong here.

                Thanx for the answers!!!
I found the problem (but still haven't found the solution...)

The problem is the zabbix user can't have permission to execute fping application. So, I executed the following commands as root user:

                chown root:zabbix /usr/sbin/fping
                chmod 4710 /usr/sbin/fping

But the user zabbix still have not permission to execute fping, but the root user can.

Sorry for the idiots questions, but I'm new in Linux...

                Grateful!

                  Permissions should be:

                  zabbix@zabbix:~> ls -l /usr/sbin/fping*
                  -rws--x--- 1 root zabbix 31400 Jan 31 2013 /usr/sbin/fping
                  -rws--x--- 1 root zabbix 31408 Jan 31 2013 /usr/sbin/fping6

Is the host alive (e.g. is it reachable via fping/ping) or is it dead?

The permissions are like you showed to me... but when I run the command /usr/sbin/fping 127.0.0.1 like zabbix user, it retun to me "permission denied"...

Has to work, definitely. Do you have selinux enabled on your system?

Sorry, but i still not work. The permission is:

                        -rws--x--- 1 root zabbix 31400 Jan 31 2013 /usr/sbin/fping
                        -rws--x--- 1 root zabbix 31408 Jan 31 2013 /usr/sbin/fping6

However, i don't know if SElinux is enabled... how to disable it?

                            SElinux aparently is not running...
I've installed Zabbix with a preload ISO and with a .vmdk (I have two installations). Both aren't working the ICMP monitoring...

Could you tell a little bit more about ICMP pings?

Could you change DebugLevel=4 and give some information from zabbix_server.log file where we can read about errors with ICMP/fping correlated?
