question on OS upgrade

Hi Zabbix experts.

We are running 7 copies of preconfigured images of Zabbix 2.0.9 (OpenSuse I think) servers on a very well and very large secured network.

My question is: how should we go about upgrading the OS on these machines? Are upgrades at all necessary or should we think of letting "what works fine work fine"?

Any opinion on this matter will be very much appreciated.

Upgrading of Zabbix itself often nas sense, since it's constantly getting new bug fixes and features. But if the features you use work fine and stable, then there's probably no much need.
As for the OS upgrade - it won't make Zabbix feel any much better, it's rather general security and vulnerability issues, e.g. Heartbleed, etc. But if your servers are on secured and firewalled network, there should not be much risk.

Since the Zabbix appliances are built on top of OpenSuse but there are no "official" OpenSuse packages available, you are in a somewhat deadlock situation.

I would suggest to build a new Zabbix system based on Redhat, CentOS, Debian (my preference) or Ubuntu. For these Linux flavours packages are available and you are upgrade-safe.
