    Requesting assistance with/for Agent Netware(Novell)

    i have read http://www.zabbix.com/manual_cookbook.php -

    "Novell

    Use MRTG Extension Program for NetWare Server (MRTGEXT.NLM) agent for Novell. The agent is compatible with protocol used by ZABBIX. It is available from http://forge.novell.com/modules/xfmod/project/?mrtgext.

    Items have to be configured of type Zabbix Agent and must have keys according to the MRTGEXT documentation.

    For example:

    * UTIL1

    1 minute average CPU utilization
    * CONNMAX

    Max licensed connections used
    * VFKSys

    bytes free on volume Sys:

    Full list of parameter supported by the agent can be found in readme.txt, which is part of the software. "

    So I have created a template called NetWare_t. I have attempted to create an item but can't find a key to suit mrtgext (i am pressing the select button next to the "key" entry). I have also tried just typing UTIL1 and MRTGEXT.UTIL1 in as the key but these don't work either.

    Basically i can't work out what to type for the key, to tell zabbix to communicate to mrtgext.nlm. I see in another thread that others have worked it out (but never wrote what they worked out), but i lack the skill here :-(

    Adding an example to what is written in the cookbook would also be good thanks.

    i am using v1.1.1 of zabbix.

    thanks in advance

    I'm a Zabbix newbie but have been using NetWare for a long time. I'll give it a shot (we have just started looking at Zabbix for monitoring so I had to figure out how to do this).

    You'll need to load MRTGEXT.NLM on the Netware server and use the -port= switch to tell it to listen on the port for that host definition that you have set in Zabbix (the Zabbix default is 10050, so LOAD MRTGEXT.NLM -port=10050 will cover it if you didn't change the port). MRTGEXT.NLM by default listens on port 9999 so if you don't change it Zabbix can't talk to the server.

    If you also load the NLM with -debug you can see the requests and responses come in (only do this for testing though). You can test MRTGEXT.NLM by telnetting to the listen port you specified and then typing in one of the directives (for example NAME will respond with the server's name and then disconnect, ).

    On the Zabbix side, create a new Item of type Zabbix Agent and for the Key put in the MRTGEXT statistic you want to gather info for by itself (UTIL1......S22...and so on). Make sure you store the Item data in a useable format (UPTIME is a text string from MRTGEXT for example).

    One oddity is that I don't actually see the results for Text Strings like UPTIME or NAME on the Latest Data page for the host under Last Value....but looking at the History for the Item on that host I do see the results are being stored. I've chalked this up to some sort of display error for now.

    EDIT: If you store these as type Character instead of type Text they show up fine on the Data page....just realized that

    That should do it for you. Good luck.

      efeldman,

      thanks for the good luck, but i didn't need it. Your message was clear and concise. It worked straight up.

      As zabbix is under test and nagios/mrtg is in place, i'll move zabbix to port 9999 i think.

      thanks very much

      For the makers of zabbix, can you add some of what efeldman has written here into the cookbook ???

        server setup

        In the server configuration, there is a port entry. Change this to 9999 and all is good.
