Newbie - setup simple ping checks - HELP PLEASE

    Hello all

I can see a few posts about this and I have tried to follow guides and YouTube videos. I will admit I am a newbie to this, so sorry in advanced.

I have installed Zabbix 5 on CentOS. I can finally say it’s up and running. I have created a host group and host, created an application, item, trigger, etc. Then added a template but can’t seem to get it to work.

To test I have an IP address to replies to pings and one that doesn’t.

In CentOS CLI I can run an fping and get an alive message back.

Anything I am missing on Zabbix or CentOS? I will add some screenshots morrow

        Hello

So as above, i have used the string but it still comes back with an error message. How can the info show a packets error, when i have set them??

I also seem to have the same issue with the Trigger string

Has anyone got any examples they can share based on Zabbix 5 please. Worst case, is their a simplier application to send out pings and alerts on dropouts

        TIA

            Hello,

Make sure that your new config is in place and that the check has run again after the configuration change (you could be seeing an old error message in the GUI).

To refresh config, run on the zabbix server itself (linux terminal as root):

            zabbix_server -R config_cache_reload

You can also select the check you want to run and click "execute now" button.

Note also that the default delay to retry an "unsupported" item is 10 minutes. See under Administration->General->Other...

Trying to setup a ping solution to monitor our customers. For now i am just trying to get it all working using google 8.8.8.8

The idea is for the system to alert if the ping fails on 2-3 attempts and clears on 2-3 successful pings, if that is possible.

I seem to have the main issues with the Item string which I am not sure is right - icmpping[“8.8.8.8”,120,20,24,50]

Also is the trigger right - {Excel 3CX:icmpping[“8.8.8.8”,120,20,24,50].last(#4,0)}=0

If i login to the linux server, I can type fping 8.8.8.8 and it replies with ALIVE.

Currently on Centos 8 with Zabbix 5 but can change this is Zabbix works better in an older viersion or another linux platform.

              TIA

Try using single quotes. Please read the https://www.zabbix.com/documentation...cks#icmp_pings documentation section.
If you want the zabix server to ping your host, it is enough to specify the icmpping without additional options.
For the test, if you want the server to ping 8.8.8.8, make a host with this address.

                  Hi all

Got it working. I moved form CentOS to Ubuntu and it all works now. Had to add a few install steps but up and running.

One question. How do you import hosts? I didn’t find the help section very good.

Can you use excel or is there a default template. Got about 300 hosts I want to add

                    Hi,

There are many ways to setup the hosts. In addition to the documentation, have a look at Youtube for many good videos, or search for blog posts on Zabbix.com or other places.

You can create one host manually in Zabbix, export it to xml, write a script that "multiplies/populates" that xml with similar hosts, and then import again.

You can use Discovery in Zabbix (see docs).

You can use the Zabbix API.

Note that you should first create a template that checks for the things you want, and then link that template to your host.
