Can a Zabbix Appliance be used in production?

I'm new to Zabbix and haven't used Linux in a while. Tutorials all show installing Zabbix on base Linux servers. Is there a reason not to use the Zabbix Appliance build running in the VM environment?

    This is not recommended.
But it will work for a while. Then you will face a lack of space and the need to customize the system...

Can't the virtual appliance be expanded if that happens?

Typically I can expand volumes, add vCPUs, and add RAM to virtual machines of they get low on resources.

True, I even ran out of space on my home install after a few months monitoring about 5 hosts. But it's great for getting your feet wet and teaching yourself how the darn thing works. I think out of the box, the appliance keeps a year of data and it's pretty busy. I dropped my data down to 90 days and that helped greatly and I doubt I'll ever got to a full install..
