Getting a graph image or SVG from the API?

Hi all,
I was trying to update some external code to get nicer graphs (like the new ones in the dashboard) and I see charts.php is going away soon in 5.4:

The Jira doesn't have much more information (https://support.zabbix.com/browse/ZBXNEXT-5702), but is there a replacement way to retrieve an image or SVG graph for use in external web pages please?

ah maybe it's not going away just yet - still I would like to get a nicer graph
