Help with First Windows workstation Host

Hi,
I have installed Zabbix 6.4.6 on my VMWare PC. That all seemed to go very smoothly.

I then downloaded Zabbix Agent 2 for Windows and installed it on a PC on the same LAN as my VMWare Zabbix install. I pretty much clicked through the install agent and entered the server IP address where it prompted for it.

The Agent did not seem to register my host with the Zabbix server, and the logs file showed a error related to 127.0.0.1, so I reinstalled Zabbix agent with proxy and server both set to my server IP - but that does not work either!

So then I added the host to the server using the workstation hostname - yikes that doesn't work either - no indication the client is registering with the server.

Both hosts can ping each other...not sure where to from here.

Add host manually in Zabbix and select the Interface as Agent. Then after you will able to monitor the host.

I found I had to add a template. But I still have some questions please:

My enviroment is Zabbix on VMWare and clients are (at the moment) on same LAN - when I add the host interface - do I put in the IP address of the client, or 127.0.0.1?

You have to enter host IP address during the add host.

By host IP address are you talking about my Zabbix Server IP (192.168.100.104) the VMWare host (192.168.100.100) or the client, i.e. workstation being monitored (192.168.100.101) ? (Sorry in this context I find host a bit ambiguous)

Thanks - and if it was a remote client using active through firewalls with port forward - what would be appropriate values then?

Agent is used 10050 port to connect with Zabbix server.

I mean a remote active agent - port 10051 I thought was correct, but since its only active remove all interfaces?

What would I use with a active agent (in terms of template?) to monitor that a remote host is up? Active agent at the moment (tested on my LAN) doesnt seem to be sending anything - all firewalls are down and ping works.

No it will not remove other interface.

And what can I use to monitor that a remote host is up? ICMP is no good as remote host is behind a NAT modem. So active is OK - but on my active test setup I don't seem to be getting data.

Why you are using active? If you have installed the agent then you can use the template Windows by Zabbix Agent. It will check the agent status.

I am testing on my LAN - but I plan to be able to use this to check remote hosts over the internet that are behind other firewalls.

Yes, you can monitor it behind the firewall also. But it will generate the traffic.

you have to plan this properly. If you want to monitor this host remotely i suggest looking also at proxy. Then agent can be passive which will send data to proxy. And then proxy collects all hosts and send it to zabbix server.
