What is proc.num "comm" parameter for?

It is new, it is improved, I have no idea what it is for and a search of the forums only reveals the announcement which does not say what it does and my other post which asks about it by example of pointing out the docs are starting to lag significantly.

Now before I get flamed, I would point out, I am eager for features as much as anybody, but at some point the documentation has to catch up. So please do not take this as major criticism. I think the Zabbix platform has made huge strides through the beta cycle, I just hope that when feature freeze is called, some effort is put into the documentation.

Documentation is one of our highest priorities. It will be significantly improved and set of HOWTO step by step instructions will be introduced. We have also long term plans for the documentation, that's why we are hiring a Technical Writer http://www.zabbix.com/jobs.php to make ZABBIX online resources as good as possible.

That is good to hear. Like I said, I believe strongly in the Zabbix platform and technology and want to see it succeed. I look forward to see the fruits of that labor. And should you need any assistance, I would be happy to help.

proc.num is for the number of processes of a particular type. For e.g. proc_num[httpd] would give you the number of httpd processes that exist in a system. This will be similar to the command "ps -ef | grep httpd | wc -l". But the caveat here is that the process should be of that name. You cannot say proc_num[apache] and expect it to respond.

I understand proc.num, I use it heavily, what I am asking about is the "comm" mode/operator. Any clarification?

              Hi

I am really sorry that i couldnt get what is the "comm" parameter your talking about. Please share with us if you get information on this

I think the general format is
              proc.num[<name>, <user> ,<state>] - Number of processes with name <name> running under user <user> with state <state>
where the <name> is the name of the process like apache etc
<user> is the user under whom that particular process is running.
state can be the state of the process like sleep, zomb, run . By default it uses all.

If name, user or state is missing all process is counted.
              Example:
Number of all processes running under user "root".
              proc.num[,root]

              Regards
              Nancy

No dice at this time, and quite frankly it is not all that important. I was just hoping someone would know. Should I figure it out I will put it in the wiki.

For anyone else who is wondering, the comm entry allows you to enter command line arguments that you want to search for.
