      Thanks for the assistance. I tried altering the images table (I had done so already when I finally ran the upgrade script, which by the way is not reference in the upgrade manual) but it had no effect. I've confirmed some of the system variables are set up latin1, not utf8, but I'm unable to set them at startup. I'm running MySQL and adding them to the [client] and [mysqld] sections of the my.cnf file either prevents the mysqld from running or prevents me from accessing the mysql client (with an unknown variable message).

      I've googled for a solution, but have yet to come up with one that works. Anyone willing to share his or her's experience on the matter?
