    zabbix server start problem, solaris+oracle

    Dear all,

    Seems I've read all the posts concerning the start of zabbix server, but still I can't find the answer.

    My configuration: Solaris 10 + Oracle 10.2.0.4 + Zabbix 1.8.2.

    I made changes to the files
    /zabbix-1.8.2/src/libs/zbxdb/db.c and
    /zabbix-1.8.2/frontends/php/include/db.inc.php
    as stated here: https://support.zabbix.com/browse/ZBXNEXT-435
    in order to use the tnsnames method to connect to Oracle instead of easy connect //hostname/database.

    My /etc/zabbix/zabbix_server.conf contains:
    DBName=ZABBIX
    DBUser, DBPassword = zabbix
    DBSocket=/var/tmp/.oracle/s#344.1 (which is zabbix listener socket)
    DBPort=1526
    other parameters are commented

    The output of zabbix_server.log runs:

    28578:20101124:111108.831 Starting Zabbix Server. Zabbix 1.8.2 (revision 11211).
    28578:20101124:111108.832 **** Enabled features ****
    28578:20101124:111108.832 SNMP monitoring: YES
    28578:20101124:111108.832 IPMI monitoring: NO
    28578:20101124:111108.832 WEB monitoring: YES
    28578:20101124:111108.832 Jabber notifications: NO
    28578:20101124:111108.832 ODBC: NO
    28578:20101124:111108.832 SSH2 support: NO
    28578:20101124:111108.832 IPv6 support: NO
    28578:20101124:111108.833 **************************
    28578:20101124:111109.015 [Z3001] Connection to database 'ZABBIX' failed: [-1]

    No more errors, no more traces. Oracle listener log contains nothing.

    If anybody has the experience in setting up Zabbix on Oracle + Solaris, could you please help me? I really don't know where to search further...

    I once tried to run a Zabbix server on Solaris with an Oracle 10 backend.

    It FAILED. Miserably. For some reason, Oracle 10 is suspect. We were successful with Oracle 11.

    Next, we had to run a screwy connect string in order to connect. If you look through some of my former posts, you may find my solution.

    As a side note, Solaris, for all of its multi-threaded goodness is not a happy mix with Zabbix, especially with Oracle on the backend. Zabbix is written to take advantage of x86's very fast single threads. We used a high-end Sun server (a t5120 with 16G of RAM) and we still had horrible performance. This was with a required number of writes per second of only 250. In theory this shouldn't have even tickled a server with so many threads. However, as soon as we pushed over to an HP DL360 running RHEL our Zabbix performance improved over 10x. Our queue dropped to almost nothing.

    I can't emphasize enough the horrid performance we had running on Sun hardware. Solaris on x86 may be okay, but I have no frame of reference.

    Don't even get me started on the problems we have with the zabbix_agentd process on our busiest servers. That's actually in a different thread here. Suffice to say that the single-threaded nature of the code keeps us from being able to take full advantage of "Active Agent" data collection with Sun hardware.

      Thanks, untergeek

      I think I'll rely on your larger experience.

      This configuration is an existing server so I was just hoping to make it up shedding hardly any blood...

          Zabbix 1.8 and Oracle 10 simply do not get along in my experience.
