[Linux] Monitoring (active) open file descriptors

    Hi,

We can use the Zabbix agent to retrieve the max amount of open file descriptors, as defined by the kernel on a Linux system.

Can we also use that zabbix agent (with the built-in options) to check how many open files they currently have? I seem to be missing it, or just completely looking over the options.

Since we're managing a few hundred servers, I don't want to implement it on each system as a custom UserParameter in the Zabbix Config, but a standard Zabbix Agent check would be nice. :-)

If not, I'll revert to a "lsof | wc -l" kind of solution, but prefer to keep that as a last resort.

    Regards,
    M.

    Hello Mojah,

Did you find a way to monitor open files in Zabbix ?

    Thanks

      From default Zabbix-options: no.

But I'm just going to look at using UserParameter's in custom Zabbix Configs, as I would've thought at first (lsof | wc -l). Not pretty, but on a short-term, it'll have to do.

        Just use in UserParameter:
        sysctl -e -n fs.file-nr|cut -f1

That tells the maximum configured open files, not the actual amount. I was hoping to do it without UserParameter's, but with built-in parameters in the zabbix agent.

We knew the answer to this question once, back when the world was young and full of truth. Without hesitation, we’d have spouted “Just take the output of lsof | wc -l!” And it’s true enough, in a general sort of way. But if you asked me the same question now, my answer would be: […]

I only have problems with taht indicator on OpenVZ servers, but it might bo related to resource management on containers.

I'm affraid this has nothing to do with monitoring FDs. Please put you question in separate thread and provide some datails. Attach logs, configuration details, operating system version, zabbix version etc.
You should be able to see at least data form zabbix server itself.

That still does not seem to be available, created https://support.zabbix.com/browse/ZBXNEXT-5327 . Please vote on it if there's still interest in such a feature.
