Zabbix agent on the same server as Zabbix server?
If it is on the same server, please match it with the interface setting of the host registered in the Zabbix web front end. If you have registered "127.0.0.1" in the Web front end, try setting the Server and ServerActive values of zabbix_agentd.conf to "127.0.0.1".

agent is a different machine.

I am currently watching 2 agents with active control. however, it is not lit green. Is this normal?

no firewall, no extra settings, or no blocking.

no errors in log files

If you only have an active check, it will not turn green.
