Now try think about your templates - how often and which metrics you are collecting and how long you store this data in history and trends.
Too often checks and too long period for history will make your db much bigger.
(mainly be carefoul about network/storages etc)

mysql doesn't free space very well, are you partitioned? Do tables need optimized? Are you innodb file per table?

Yes, if you want to clean up and release space in MySQL/MariaDB best way is exp/imp (dump).
So, you can change setup for item check freq, history time etc, wait some time to db will delete data internaly with housekeeper.
Than stop app/db - export/import data and you will be ok.
Else change db postgres+Timescale or use partitioning etc.
But if your db is smaller than 100GB it will be no need.
