Connection refused with simple checks

I've just added a new host to my zabbix server, which I plan to monitor using only simple checks. However, zabbix-server says "Connection refused". I guess that's because I haven't installed zabbix-agent in those hosts.

My question is: why does it say "Connection refused" if i'm only using simple checks?. Do I still have to install zabbix-agent in those hosts?. I thought that was the whole advantage of using simple checks (ie. not having to install zabbix-agent).

Simple checks do not require ZABBIX (or any) agent running on a monitored host. Make sure item type is set to "Simple Check" for simple checks.

Thanks Alexei. That was the problem. I never changed the Item Type to "Simple check", I somehow thought that the item type was implicit when I select the item key. Anyway, to avoid this kind of problems it would be nice if the Select Item Key popup window would also set the Item Type field automatically.
