    The eternal IT-services

    Hi Alexi

I've been wrestling with the IT-services for a while in 1.4.4 and my conclusion is that they are broken, or at least working randomly at best. This seems to be a long running issue since I've found posts from 2004 without real answers, and the same problems people still have. Will that is be fixed with 1.6 or will it continue to be broken?

When browsing through the forum it's filled with people having problems and not receiving real answers (or any answers from time to time). Here are a few:

Can you please reply to this and tell the real state of the "IT services"? I can't see anything in the road map mentioning fixing issues with SLAs.

And just so you don't think I'm flaming or trolling, I'm not. I like the general setup of Zabbix and there are many features I really like but it's hard trusting the system (and especially making bosses trust it) when one have to go "Well, don't mind the figure here. It's not correct".

I agree with your general sentiment. Developers, please let us know what's going on!

I totally second that entire post. I even volunteered to debug this whole thing - all I asked for is somebody to generally explain to me the logic behind the SLA calculation - I got no answer.

Generally, the project management of Zabbix is kinda weird. For example: there is very little reaction to submitted patches, even to the ones that fix REAL bugs.

Don't get me wrong, the Zabbix team does a great job, but they need to make a choice: if this is a corporate venture, then they need to be more efficient with support and more careful with releases - too many bugs make it into stable versions.
And if they are too busy with other things, then this needs to be changed into a normal open source project, with many more people involved in development.

No developer who can just confirm if the SLAs are broken, and if so when it can be expected to be fixed? Or is it a user problem, and if so explain what the problem is?

I fully understand that everything can't be top priority but if it's broken I think it should be mentioned in the manual and maybe even a note when one can expect the SLAs to work (1.6?).

            It's open source

            Hi,

I'm a bit suprised with this post, zabbix is a great tool and better is opensource.

If a feature is weird or needs improvements you can wait until is fixed or move to fix the problem or pay for support.

I can agree that more open development can be archived but fully disagree with the rest.

            Just my opinion

What is surprising with this post? A feature seems to be broken and I'm trying to get an answer from the project if it really is broken or if me and several with me are using the feature wrong. What I think is weird about this thread is that no developer has used the 30 seconds or so it takes to post a short reply stating the status.

I also think that Zabbix is a great tool but when you are monitoring a farm of servers is robustness important. Sure it's open source and I could probably make changes that might work, but also might segfault 3 in the morning a Sunday, leading to loss of data, angry bosses and a tired me. It'd also force me to redo it every time there's an update in Zabbix.

As I said in my post wasn't this a try to troll and I'm not really interested in the "the source is there, make your own fork"-discussion. I just want a plain reply from the developers, does it work, if so how since lots of people are having problems, or doesn't it work and if so when is it planned to work.

We're working hard on many aspects of zabbix and when we have some time we will definitely retest SLAs to make needed(if needed) fixes for zabbix1.6 (maybe 1.4.x)

I'm sorry, but that's just boilerplate. We're asking for specifics here. You could have said "We're very busy and we are not working IT Services. We know there's no manual. Don't expect anything new on this for the forseeable future." That would have been a straight answer, and much preferable.

                    Hello all,

I hadn't touched "IT Services" before. However, we now hava a client that wants a report on availability for his systems.
To my surprise I only get 100% scores. The figures look nice, but I know for a fact that we had problems on some nodes and when I look at the event history I can clearly see we did indeed have problems.

They just don't show up in the IT services report.
What would it take to get this fixed? (get a support contract?)
                    With kind regards,

                    Raymond

I'd be interested in that answer as well.

Damnit, who are you trying to con here? If this whole feature is an embarassement, then just come out and say so! Don't instead mislead people into counting on it.

We are NOT asking even asking you to fix the problem, we are asking to just ACKNOWLEDGE it, so that people won't count on it.

Also, some of us are programmers and we could actually help fix it. The problem is that this is not a minor issue, and you have repeatedly shown bad management when it comes to accepting patches. I don't want to create my own patch only to learn that it will be useless against the next release. I already have to compile Zabbix with 5 patches (3 of which are mine).

So please, be alittle bit more professional and don't bury your otherwise excellent product!

Yes but is it in a working state right now? If so how does one use it?

                          Thanks.

PS. Does ANYONE use the IT Services section? if so please enlighten us as to how it works.

As far as I understand it now, you can group triggers together and you get to see up/down/unknown percentages of day/week/month/year time periods.
I think it could be very handy to group all "unreachable" triggers for a client and see how much of your SLA you achieved in the past month.
                            With kind regards,

                            Raymond

I am also interested in a short answer from Zabbix team stating if "IT Services" functionality is usable or not.

Right now, I have a lot of difficulties to understand how it works !
                              Just a few examples:
                              1. I have set up a service one month ago and it always reports 100% availability but I know that some triggers linked to it have been TRUE for some time.

                              2. "IT SERVICES AVAILABILITY REPORT" page show availibility data for periods for which no data exists ! (I had a hard time explaining to my management why some service could have 100% availability in 2003 when neither the service nor Zabbix existed in our company )

So, Zabbix Team (Alexei, are you listening ?) let us know if we should continue investing time trying to understand how IT Services work or if we should wait for a new version of this functionality.

                              Thank you
