It's interesting to note that for some services, Zabbix does detect them to be running.

For instance, I can successfully check if SMTP and HTTP are running:

So one thing that we have optimized as much as possible was a basic read from /proc. On RHEL3 it was in /proc/partitions and in RHEL5 it was in /proc/diskstats (I assume that thsi one likely works w/ RHEL4 as well)
