Since I am new to Zabbix, I have a lot of devices to discover and hosts to create. I have to assume there is a way to get host info populated during the discovery of devices. I haven't found a screen to make that happen. I was thinking there would be an OID provided to determine the host name of the device. I have experimented with creating hosts, and the ones I have created have the graphs, dashboards, and web columns greyed out. This is shown under Monitoring-> Hosts in the side menu. What step do I need to take to get those features working?

How to have Hosts that are created by discovery rules to have the host name listed?

Widely supported OID for sysName is 1.3.6.1.2.1.1.5.0, so during network discovery you should add acheck for this value and then you can use that value as host name or host visual name. (was this, what you asked about "name being listed" ? ).
After that you can create a "Discovery action" what can do a variation of things, add templates to host, move host to hostgroups, inform you about discovery etc..

My latest discovery of UPSes is still placing the IP address in the host name field and the visible name field. I am using the OID that returns the network host name in the discovery rule, and in the Discovery Action screen, I have set Add Host, Add to Groups, and Link Templates as the operations. Here is my Discovery Rule. Is there a setting I should change to get the Host Name text to be the Host name when it is discovered?

The easiest way is to use Network Discovery Actions to automatically create and configure hosts. You can set the discovery rule to identify devices by SNMP, then have an action automatically add the host, assign the correct template, and configure its SNMP interface. You don't necessarily need an OID for the hostname; Zabbix can use discovered IPs and SNMP information, depending on the device and discovery configuration. For the greyed-out Graphs, Dashboards, and Web options, make sure the host has an interface, is linked to at least one appropriate template, and has enabled items collecting data. Once Zabbix starts receiving data from the host, those monitoring options should become available.Since I am new to Zabbix, I have a lot of devices to discover and hosts to create. irontmp,
"You can set the discovery rule to identify devices by SNMP, then have an action automatically add the host, assign the correct template, and configure its SNMP interface."
That is what is shown above. I have the action set to do three things.
"Zabbix can use discovered IPs and SNMP information, depending on the device and discovery configuration"
Sure, Zabbix can discover things by SNMP, but it isn't automatically using what it discovered where I need it. So, I figured implicitly telling it to use an OID I can confirmed provides the host name should make it work. However, I must still be missing something it the process.

Here is the result of a snmpget command on the Zabbix server:
iso.3.6.1.2.1.1.5.0 = STRING: "RVNL-IDFBU01"
The UPSes do not have DNS entries. This was not a problem with SolarWinds. Since I am just doing SNMP discovery, and I am not using DNS for the hostname, I suspect not having DNS entries for all the UPSes should be fine.Last edited by John_W; 07-10-2026, 16:52.Comment

Normal name, should work just fine...
That DNS record thing was anyway a long strech from my side...
I am out of ideas here... I have never used netwrok discovery, so I have not also debugged it ... Autoregistration of agents and sync from cmdb over api works much better...

I'm not sure how well this is working. I made the change to two other groups of UPSes and removed them from the hosts and waited for a new discovery to get the devices again. I still don't get the host names show, even though the setup is the same. The problem might be that I can delete the hosts in the Monitoring - > Discovery but not under Monitoring -> Hosts.

I tried removing the first OID in the discovery rule I posted above and just left the second one, which is the host name I want shown on the device, and it worked on the 2 other IP ranges. I also set it to 10-minute and 30-minute intervals rather than 5 minutes.
