Zabbix, Selbetti and SERPRO analyze how Open Source drives new business models and technology management in companies and governments

Monday, June 15 – Open Source has established itself as a fundamental component for digital transformation, monitoring, scalability, and operational efficiency in both the public and private sectors, as well as for reallocating financial and human resources. This was one of the main messages of the panel “Open Source, Data and Business”, held on May 29 during the Zabbix Conference 2026 in São Paulo.

The panel brought together on the main stage of the Zabbix Conference Maira Cristine de Souza Silva, Manager of the Observability, Event Monitoring, and Predictive Analysis Department at SERPRO, Brazil; Jackson Becker, Head of Technology and Services at Selbetti Brazil; and, as moderator, Luciano Alves, CEO of Zabbix Latam. The panelists analyzed and discussed the challenges and opportunities facing the current technology ecosystem and the impact of Open Source on business.

Luciano Alves highlighted the importance of SERPRO as the largest public technology company in Latin America and noted that millions of Brazilians use services supported by Open Source technologies every day without even realizing it. He also emphasized that Open Source software should no longer be considered a low-cost alternative, but rather the foundation upon which the modern digital ecosystem is built.

During the discussion, topics such as observability, monitoring, modernization of legacy systems, sovereign cloud, platform integration, and the challenges faced by public and private organizations in achieving more efficient and scalable operations were addressed. The role of Zabbix as a platform capable of unifying monitoring across hybrid, traditional, and modern environments was also highlighted.

SERPRO: Evolution toward observability

Maira Cristine de Souza Silva, Manager of the Observability, Event Monitoring, and Predictive Analysis Department at SERPRO, explained that Open Source is a fundamental pillar of the organization’s technological infrastructure.

SERPRO operates more than 120 solutions based on open technologies, and much of its infrastructure is built on this model, allowing it to develop services with greater flexibility and adaptability.

She also shared that SERPRO is evolving from an approach focused solely on monitoring toward a comprehensive observability model, aiming to understand the impact of technology on the business, analyze application behavior, and correlate infrastructure metrics with operational indicators.

“We are going through a transition that is not only technological but also cultural,” she stated, explaining that teams must broaden their perspective and move beyond focusing solely on whether a server is available or not.

She also highlighted that Open Source offers particularly relevant advantages for the public sector by reducing vendor dependency, enabling solution customization, and better adapting to government procurement and bidding processes.

SELBETTI: Results over tools

Jackson Becker, Head of Technology and Services at Selbetti Brazil, explained that Zabbix is their primary monitoring tool. The company has nearly 7,000 clients monitored directly or indirectly with Zabbix, and for 237 of them, Zabbix is the main tool.

He emphasized that the market has shifted its focus, and today the priority is no longer selecting a specific tool, but ensuring the results delivered to clients.

“The conversation is no longer so much about which tool I am going to use, but about the results I am going to deliver.”

In terms of efficiency, he noted that adopting Open Source technologies represents savings for Selbetti of more than 1.5 million reais per year, with projections of reaching 2.5 million annually.

He highlighted that Zabbix’s integration capabilities allow them to offer unified observability to clients across diverse sectors such as retail, agribusiness, industry, and government.

As an example, he presented a use case in the retail sector involving the monitoring of electronic labels and automatic price updates on shelves. Before implementing the solution, the company struggled to monitor the entire process; with Zabbix, it gained end-to-end visibility across the operation, optimizing control and incident detection.

The panel concluded with a clear consensus among participants: Open Source is no longer an alternative or complementary option, but the foundation of the digital world we live in. Its ability to drive innovation, reduce costs, integrate complex environments, and strengthen observability positions it as a key element for public and private organizations to face present and future technological challenges.
