What's New in Zabbix 6.4

Questons & Answers

Question: Will the Zabbix's provided template like Cisco IOS be updated to the new approach with the walk instead of using Discover?
Answer: As far as I know, all templates will be gradually updated, but unfortunately there are, let's say no specific terms I could have named.

Question: Will you send the slides as an email to us?
Answer: Most likely later on the recording will be published. So you will be able to review it again. And slides again, most likely also will be, but I will need to have to specify on that.

Question: So new SNMP pre-processing is kind of replacement for filters where we before were filtering F-type or E-file is?
Answer: No, it's not related to the filters. Filters were used just to specify what do you want to be discovered or not. And in this case, you more like assign LLD macros to the OIDs.

Question: Are there security hardening guidelines, best practices available for Azure?
Answer: We can give recommendations about Zabbix, but not about Azure specifically. We have a one-click deployment of Zabbix in Azure marketplace. For security and hardening, there are webinars, trainings, and published information on how to make Zabbix secure on many different levels.

Question: Can symptoms be remembered if the combination of events happen again, or are they unique for every event?
Answer: In Zabbix 6.4, we have introduced the notion of cause and symptom events. The next step is to introduce a next-generation event correlation engine. This functionality is in the roadmap for Zabbix 7.0.

Question: Can the dependent trigger feature work in conjunction with both cause and symptom events?
Answer: Not directly, but you definitely can use both. Event correlation will be improved in the future, which also can be checked by the roadmap.

Question: Where are the proxies installed at the client sites?
Answer: Usually, yes, but that's not mandatory. You can install them even just to make the data collection on the same side.

Question: Does anyone know about compatibility Zabbix 6.4 with Grafana Zabbix data source? Is there any major API changes?
Answer: It shouldn't be, especially if you just use it for the graphs.

Question: Will dynamic item value thresholds work with string values?
Answer: Most likely it doesn't work with the string data. The documentation states that you have to specify a numeric threshold.

Question: Will the recorded version of the webinar be published afterwards?
Answer: It should be, usually those are. I'm not sure when exactly, but most likely it will be. So you will see that on YouTube afterwards.

Question: Support of Sparkline charts was on the roadmap for 6.4, but I cannot find it in the release notes or still in the roadmap for the next versions.
Answer: Yeah, so Sparkline charts are not implemented yet. And actually I think they've been postponed. It's not in the roadmap, it's kind of in our internal roadmap. Note that the public roadmap contains just the list of the most important things. Yeah, but it's coming, absolutely it's coming and Sparkline will be supported at some point in the future.

Question: Is it possible to convert the problem events from different hosts, host A and host B as symptoms?
Answer: Yes, of course, they are not host dependent in this case. They are just, you yourself select what's a cause, what's a symptom.

Question: When there will be a native R syslog solution?
Answer: Well, I think in the future we will work on, well, in log management solution, maybe it will be implemented natively or we will implement some sort of integration with existing solution. It's in our roadmap most likely. I don't remember exactly, but I think it's planned for 7.2 or 7.4, something like this.

Question: When will we be getting parent-child relationship in Zabbix?
Answer: Please. Yeah, that's, yeah, sorry, sorry, Alexander. Sorry for interrupting, but that's exactly why we are thinking about the event correlation engine that it will really be designed to cover such use cases like this parent-child relationship, topology relationship between the different, problems of different classes, problems with a different set of tags and so on. So it is also coming very soon.

Question: With the new features, how much minimum resources I will need in this version?
Answer: All the resources, all the requirements of each Zabbix version are actually presented in the documentation. So you can always check what amount of CPU or memory you will need based on what you expect to monitor. So please check it. You will see it there definitely. Actually, the same number of resources required as for the previous release, like 6.0, 6.2, 6.4, exactly the same number of, well, memory, disk, and CPU.

Question: Can you describe the improvements to system process data collection for Zabbix agent?
Answer: There was not system process data. There was a new template for system processes, OS processes specifically. This was introduced, so not improvements, but our new template.

Question: Is it possible to make an update from 6.7 to 6.4 with self-created templates, which are created in 6.2? And is it possible to import the template?
Answer: Yes, well, yes. So yes, absolutely possible. And templates will be there. You will not lose your templates. Do not worry, we never just randomly replace the templates which users have created in their Zabbix.

Question: Can I use LDAP for user for my company and user from DB for customers?
Answer: Yes, you can now use, from 6.2, you already can use multiple LDAP authentifications, LDAP servers, basically. So you can do the same with 6.4.

Question: Thank you for the webinar regarding template versioning. Is it possible to keep templates in a Git repository already?
Answer: Zabbix templates are already kept in a Git repository. You can use a commit hook on your templates and call Zabbix API to update and upload the latest template version for CICD automation.

Question: Should I upgrade from 6.0 LTS to 6.4 or wait for 7.0 LTS?
Answer: It depends on your Zabbix size, upgrade planning, and support preferences. If you are okay with upgrading from 6.4 to 7.0 when it's released, go for it. If you prefer long-term support, stick with LTS versions.

Question: Is there a bulk import feature plan for templates in the front end?
Answer: It's already supported. You can have multiple templates in your XML or YAML file and import/export them. If you have each template in a separate file, you can export multiple templates together.

Question: Is there a thought for a template converter tool in order to be able to use a community template created for 4.0?
Answer: Templates are backwards compatible, so you can take an old template and import it to the new Zabbix. It's not supported only when taking a template from a newer version and importing it to an older version.

Question: I think for some use cases in a very small environment, Zabbix server will be okay with SQLite database, but the support for it was dropped somewhere around version two. Is it possible to get back SQLite support for Zabbix server?
Answer: SQLite support for Zabbix server is unlikely to return, but you can run MySQL on Raspberry Pi. SQLite is supported only for Zabbix proxy.

Question: Will there be some easy to grasp and get an overview of Zabbix Docker composed the all-in-one solution?
Answer: There are videos and tutorials on using Zabbix in Docker, as well as a detailed Docker page.

Question: The link for a simple stream and receiver example, which is mentioned in the documentation isn't publicly visible. Can you check it?
Answer: Noted, and we will check the link.

Question: I'm currently running a server and proxy ping in the same host, but I need to make two hosts for each host. Is there a better way of doing this instead of creating two or two?
Answer: It depends on your specific use case. Zabbix agent can do pings with a user parameter or built-in checks for ports. It's difficult to provide a specific recommendation without more details.

Question: I asked if a lot of not discovered anymore item could decrease performance and disrupt the database. I asked this because the new VM template creates a lot of this. What can be done?
Answer: Potentially it can decrease performance, but it's based on many factors, such as timeouts and errors. Check your timeouts and see if you really need the not supported items. Filter them out if necessary. More details would be needed to provide a specific recommendation.

Question: Can I use LDAP for user for my company and user from DB for customers?
Answer: Yes, you can now use, from 6.2, you already can use multiple LDAP authentifications, LDAP servers, basically. So you can do the same with 6.4.
